The Queen of Mirrors
She of the Shattered Visage. The Endless Reflection. Lady of Uncountable Eyes. Warden of the Other Self.
cw: eye harm
When magma from the first volcano cooled into obsidian, darkly reflecting the moon’s glow, she was already watching.
She opened her eyes upon the first man to polish copper to a sheen, and knew the things he didn’t want to know about himself.
Each new specular surface another set of eyes. Every shattered mirror a dozen new mirrors. An expanded pool of knowledge; terrible understanding of the darker parts of the builders and the breakers.
She keeps it all hugged to her chest so that you don’t need to acknowledge it unless you choose to…whereupon she smiles sadly and releases it into the world. The self-realization that leads to gleeful ruin. If you want it, she is obliged to give it. It’s yours, after all.
She will only take it back from those who deserve it. What metric is used to determine the worthy is only clear to her. The contrite merchant-cheat refused outright, drowned in guilt and gold and blood. The gore-soaked tyrant accepted without need for recompense, living out a peaceful end to a horrific life. The noble beggar tasked with completing an obtuse goal for a brief moment of peace before an ignoble death in the gutter.
The waters are a blind spot for her. Perhaps due to the unrigid nature of such reflections. Perhaps due to a pact with some other timeless power. Maybe she’s just deeply troubled by what lies beneath, and reflects that back upon you.
She has no priests or churches. When one is already everywhere it is diminishing to be tied to particular buildings or people. She is most intrigued by those who manage to avoid her gaze for extended periods of time. Some of those she will invite to join her Court, such that they may observe the world with her.
While she almost always sees you, her attention is divided into infinite pieces. She is not all powerful, merely all-seeing. Should you wish to draw her attention upon yourself, the following can be done.
Stand in front of your reflection. Take a piece of obsidian and scratch out your reflection’s eyes. Throw the obsidian behind you, do not look at it again. Take a shard of glass or other reflective material and insert it into your left eye. If the ritual is performed correctly there will be no lasting harm. Her Gaze will focus and you may make your plea.
Do not under any circumstance perform this ritual using your reflection from water or some other mutable substance. The water will accept the scratches of the obsidian; do not let this fool you. Although at that point, it’s too late.
It is already on the way.
